International Albinism Awareness Day
On 13 June 2021, the world celebrates International AlbinismAwareness Day. This year’s celebration is held under the theme “Strength Beyond All Odds”. Albinism is a rare group of genetics that cause the hair, skin and eyes to have little or no pigmentation. A defect in one of several genes that produce or distribute melanin causes albinism. The amount and type of melanin the body produces determine the colour of the skin, hair and eyes. Melanin, the chemical that is responsible for eye, skin and hair colour, plays an important role in the development of optic nerves, so people with albinism have vision problems.
